Here’s a well written and expertly illustrated zine! K.M. Claude and R.E. Hellinger serve up two unique stories that take readers down a dark road. First up is a brief exploration and personal identification to Caravaggio‘s Judith Beheading Holofernes. Next up is a longer piece about two brothers and a family secret. Both tales are interesting and effortlessly hold your attention from start to finish. Accompanying the stories are numerous, beautifully illustrated, grotesque drawings. The artwork in Guillozine is absolutely exquisite!

Dog Meat Comic is a 24-page, Black and White, ADULTS ONLY mini comic created by Gabriel C. Rodriguez.
This mini contains seven short stories based on lyrics written by Ice T (T. Marrow) and interpreted and illustrated by Gabriel C. Rodriguez. Each story features classic comic characters engaged in some very out of character activities! First Gabriel treats readers to The Peanuts as they have a run in with the cops and Franklin decides to run! Next a shotgun toting Andy Capp takes matters into his own hands! Then the dark side of Dilbert emerges as he steps into the night with knife in hand! In the middle of all of this we deploy to a combat zone with Beetle Baily and crew! Then Zippy the Pinhead drops in on some unsuspecting kids and Dennis the Menace pisses off the wrong guy! The issue concludes with Hobbes taking a love smitten Calvin for a walk on the seedier side of town!
Everything about this comic is great entertainment! The twisted takes on the characters and the recognizable art styles all come together to take you to unexpected places that’ll leave you wanting more!

For Throw Back Thursday it’s…Purgatory (“A Rejects Story”) http://www.fantagraphics.com/purgatory is a 94-page, Black and White, autobiographic comic written and illustrated by Casanova Nobody Frankenstein. From Fantagraphics’ F.U. Press, published by Triple G.
Cassie takes us back in time and inside the loneliness and turmoil of his teenage world as he deals with the anxiety of school, an emotionally unsupportive family, and discovering his own identity. These subjects are told through journal-like entries accompanied by single page illustrations. Each journal page has been type written and affixed over the original handwritten text complete with smudges, shadows of tape, and paper edges. The design and composition of Purgatory gives it a very personal and raw look that completely complements the story contained within.
The biting narrative paints a bleak picture of teenage life in a big city where groups form and self-segregate based on interests, neighborhoods, and ethnicities. Cassie details his strategic maneuvering through the hostile teenage wasteland, calculating everything from which form of transportation to take to school, to which entrance to go through. Cassie explains how each of these choices had impacts on rest of the day, so moves had to be analyzed and consequences considered.
The one overriding feeling conveyed throughout Purgatory is that of determination. Determination to persevere, to overcome, and to break free. And that’s exactly what Cassie did. He struggled through the obstacles and shadows that fill the teenage years with an almost unbearable angst and he emerged…as Casanova Nobody Frankenstein!

Change is in the air! Last issue Blake said changes were coming and here they are! First up is the name. Copy This! is now Copy That! Next is the size. This issue is a traditional 8-pager, and there ain’t no interview! Yep, Blake opens with his usual note to readers and then we jump right into the news and info section! Blake does mention that the interviews will continue and a younger group of creators outside the Newave and Obscuro crowd will be the focus! But, that’s not all! Tim Bird beautifully illustrates a captivating tale of woodlands that have been shaped over years by the people that have inhabited the area. But, just as the people have influenced the woods, the woods have cast their own spell over the people. Throughout this intriguing story Tim brilliantly describes in both word and picture how nature and people have been molded by time and circumstance in this place. Going back to a time when the area of Southern England was forest covered, to the present day of scattered trees among the urban sprawl, Tim spins an informative history lesson complete with interesting facts, characters, and lasting impressions.

Later Thighbone Jones tries his chops at the Blues Bagpipes and receives a somewhat drafty reception! And finally Corny is confronted by a group of Uppity-Graders and ridiculed for her use of 20th century tech in the 21st century!

For Mini-Comic Monday it’s…Copy This! #50! This issue is a 40-page, B&W info/news mini comic zine published by D. Blake Werts.
For this, the 50th issue, Blake puts himself in the interviewee seat as Richard Krauss does the honors of interviewer!
Right out of the gate Blake opens up about the surprises (both good and bad) that Copy This! has brought him over the past four years. Following that Richard asks Blake to talk a little about his early interest in comics, which leads to an unexpected hubcaps connection! Then comes the minis! Blake reveals how he came to find the world of mini comix and the Newave underground of the ‘80s! He goes on about attending SPACE and meeting lots of creators and how the idea of Copy This! emerged. Blake also describes his collecting habit and how things have changed since Copy This! took off, and the challenges of downsizing. During this interview Blake also mentions one of his side gigs as reviewer for the awesome zine Xerography Debt, and then announces some coming changes for the future of Copy This!
Toward the end Blake talks about where he’d like to go with Copy This! and what YOU, the mini-comic community, can do to help get there! It’s pretty easy really, just send him a little postage love, send in finished articles/interviews, and send in your 8, 12, or 16-page mini for Blake to distribute with Copy This! Imagine if we all did just one of these things! I’m gonna knock out a mini to share with Blake along with some postage love!

Rusty, the guy in a Chicken Outfit, and his trusty little green friend Stan, continue their very strange adventure that leads them through dive bars, corporate hallways, and basement lairs. As they navigate the perilous world they find themselves in they must contend with flat-faced creatures, witches, evil plans, psychics, and a purple clad performer doing a little GG Allin stage show! Rusty and Stan push through their obstacles while at the same time realizing nothing really matters in the long run ‘cause it’s all just going to turn to dust and blow away…unless you have some high degree of celebrity status that ensures your artistic creations will be preserved for future generations!
This crazy comic has everything! A weird, well written, crazy story that unfolds loaded with suspense, action, horror, nudity, and a guy wearing a Chicken Outfit! Each polished page is filled with excellent drawings and bright and vibrant colors. Every background is well established and detailed, and light and shadow are used with great effect throughout the book!

For Mini-Comic Monday it’s…Copy This! #49. This issue is a 40-page, B&W info/news mini comic zine published by D. Blake Werts. Cover by Dale Martin.
Blake returns to the interviewer role this time around and shines the spotlight on Dale Martin! Blake and Dale start off with a discussion about Dale’s experiences living in different states. Then the two talk about the shifting comic convention scene away from original storytelling to fan art and cosplay. Next Dale provides some insight on balancing the creative process with self-promotion. Dale also delves a bit into his history of discovering the digest format, finding like-minded folks through APA-5, and losing a community of peers. Later Dale talks about the struggle of finding an audience somewhere between comics and zines, and the unexpected birth of Watusi the Talking Dog. Toward the end of the interview Dale and Blake talk about joys of attending SPACE and then dive a little deeper into Dale’s painting and collage work. The two end the interview with some thoughts on the future of comic periodicals and web comics.
