New at the Database: David Lee Ingersoll

July 1, 2020 in News

Newest entries at the Comic Zine Database include 15 late ’80s minicomics published by David Lee Ingersoll. These entries were created from hard copies donated by the author.

Only 50 or so entries until we’re at 15,000!

New mini-comics in the works!

July 1, 2020 in News

Just a quick note to say I’m working on getting the PF mini-comics back on track. I’m putting finishing touches on a new issue of Wag Rag and after that will probably be a mini themed around “punks” in the ’50s by Carl Alessi.

The minis are available to subscribers through the Poopsheet Foundation Patreon.

In the mailbox: AMAZING LITTLE COMICS #1 by Joe Bagdon

July 1, 2020 in News

Joe Bagdon makes his return to small press comics! It’s a sci-fi/fantasy/superhero anthology comic that recalls the Golden Age of comics (as well as fanzines) in a sharp, nicely-designed mini package. Joe’s looking for collaborators and has a big project in the works that sounds like it’ll be a nice companion to the Mini-Comic and Fanzine Database (or vice versa). Email Joe for more info (his PayPal account is that address as well).

Coming soon from Hollow Press: Mat Brinkman and Al Columbia

June 30, 2020 in News

Hollow Press in Italy has a few new items in the works including Multiforce Shit by Mat Brinkman, “a collection of all drawings, sketches and ads by Mat Brinkman originally published in Paper Rodeo (1995-2001) zine outside the Multiforce main comic full pages.” Pre-order here.

Also: a new comic by Al Columbia, Cheapy the Guinea Pig, as well as a new edition of The Biologic Show. Both of these are still in the works but there is a new Cheapy print available for pre-order here.

Plus more! If Brinkman and Columbia are your bag then you’ll want to visit the Hollow Press website to check out the rest of their wares.

In the mailbox: Floyd Lewis, mini-comic machine

June 30, 2020 in News

This package arrived a little while ago but, if Floyd is out of anything here, I bet he’s got plenty more to substitute. He seems to have a constant stream of new minis coming out!

Something he does that’s very old school is just reprint stuff he likes (to give away to fans). Here’s a list of the most recent zines I know about (some pictured, some not): Dartgirl: Space Station Disaster (three issues of comics by Floyd), Dartgirl: The Alien Dark, Spidermanga Fan Comic, Takuya Yamashiro Must Become Spiderman Fan Comic (full-color fumetti pulled from the 1978 Japanese Spider-Man movie, or is it the TV series?), Lost in Space Manga, Thunderbirds Vehicle Specifications, Bat Manga (cool ’60s Batman graphics from Japan), Microcomic #1 (reprints a Golden Age kids’ story I can’t place), Survivor Rule Book, Fan Art (art by Floyd), Mystery Science Theater 3000 Episode Guide, and Batman Technical Manual. That’s a lot of minis, right?

Check out the Microcomic website or email Floyd Lewis to see what he’s got available.

In the mailbox: Mary Farfisa minis by Jim Cheff

June 30, 2020 in News

These are fun. I especially like the ‘I Love Music’ Book, which is like a tiny children’s book that nicely illustrates the various ways music can be a part of our lives. It’d be a great little gift for the kids in your life.

Both of these are available in a fun pack from Jim’s Mini Mart shop and also be sure to check out his Patreon page for more info on what he’s up to (like radio plays for kids!).

MICE offers mini-comics mini-grants

June 30, 2020 in News

From the MICE website:

Every year, The Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo awards outstanding new mini-comics with MICE Mini-Grants to help offset print and production costs. This year, we want to do even more to give back and support all you talented comic creators during this difficult time. While MICE might look pretty different this October as a virtual festival, it wouldn’t be the same without the unique stories and voices found in mini-comics.

In 2020, The Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo will award 30 MICE Mini-Grants of $100 each! Creators from New England and beyond are encouraged to submit previously unpublished print mini-comics for consideration through August 1st.

The expanded Mini-Grant program is made possible thanks to a matching financial contribution from PrintNinja. We are also excited to announce our partnership with Radiator Comics, which offers winning entries an open opportunity for retail and online distribution.

More info.

In the mailbox: comics from Henry Jaepelt

May 27, 2020 in News

Relatively recent releases from Henry and Fafá Jaepelt include: Discos (a comics anthology about music and records both real and imagined), Catzine #4 (you guessed it, a cat-centric comics anthology), Encrucijada #2 (comics and art from Latin America), and two issues of Aventuras do Pierre (a cat comic by Fafá). I’ve been a fan of Henry’s for years and it’s always a treat to see his work but there’s also lots of good stuff here from Fafá, of course, and a number of other artists from Brazil, Chile, Argentina and elsewhere (including Puerto Rico). Note that the text is mostly in Portuguese and Spanish but don’t let that stop you from checking them out.

Recently received: THE ZINE-OLOGY REPORT #2

May 24, 2020 in News

Alan Sissom’s reviewzine is kind of a spotlight vehicle where each title gets a whole page (mini-sized though it may be). You get a cover repro, ordering info and some impressions. I like it and any print zine pushing other print zines is okay in my book. There’s also a bit of news, a few pages of letters and cover art by Tom Brinkmann! There aren’t too many like this these days.

Check it out!

Steven Ogden has left us.

March 4, 2019 in News

My friend, longtime fan, author, fanzine publisher and comics researcher Steven Ogden died on March 1st, 2019 after a lengthy battle with leukemia and everything that goes along with its treatment.

Steve – along with his wife, Vicki – published fanzines and mini-comics through Spotted Zebra Press/New Spotted Zebra Press since the ’80s (or perhaps slightly earlier). Publications included Ouroborus, the mammoth Brad W. Foster Checklist of Published Works from the 20th Century (1972-2000), Edgar’s Journal, Metaphysical Pornographic Funnies and many others. He was also a longtime member of FAPA (The Fantasy Amateur Press Association).

Steve was so enthusiastic about mini-comics and fan publishing and was also a supporter of the Poopsheet Foundation. One of the ways he showed that support was by donating a stack of disks containing thousands of cover scans for the Mini-Comic and Fanzine Database. I’ve thus far used over 2,000 of those scans to create new entries and still have disks I haven’t even touched yet.

I feel fortunate that I got to hang out with Steve and Vicki on several occasions (unlike with most folks I know through comics) and am really thankful for that. My heart breaks for Vicki, family and friends. It may be a cliche but the one consolation is that he no longer has to suffer as he as for so long.

I can’t believe you’re gone, Steve. Thank you for everything.
