From Annie Koyama:
I’ve published and supported Dustin Harbin since 2010, when I saw his work at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival (TCAF). He’s a unique talent who I’ve also commissioned to do various ads and promotional pieces for the press. It’s been really rewarding to watch his comics progress. I still mourn the kid’s book that we’d decided to do together but that never came to pass. No one has a more professional show set up, though I foresee hernia operations in Dustin’s future if he continues to carry that rig around. I’m happy to call him my friend, even though he famously told my mom that he likes my sister Helen better. Please check out his work if you’ve missed it.
“The entirety of this grant will go to offset the costs of 2-color Risograph printing, at a handsome size of 7” x 8.5”. Printing to be done by Woolly Press in Asheville, North Carolina, USA (woollypress.com).
Normally I’d print a comic like this myself, very small as all my diary comics have been done, allowing me to do all the printing and assembling here at home. Because of the greater than normal detail of this comic, and especially the scope and scale of some of the scenery I’m drawing (the wide open desert of Joshua Tree), being able to print larger gives me the opportunity to create something a little more impactful, lean into some of the details, and generally draw one million lumpy rocks littered everywhere. The other benefit of larger size and nicer printing is the higher production quality for the tonal subtleties of ink washes, which often get lost when converted to a halftone my humble LaserJet can print reliably.” — Dustin Harbin
DUSTIN HARBIN is a cartoonist and illustrator from North Carolina. In 2010 and 2015, Koyama Press published collections of his autobiographical comics—with the appropriate appellation—DIARY COMICS. From their humble beginnings as a sketchbook exercise documenting the quotidian, oftentimes with hilarious results, Harbin’s DIARY COMICS have grown into quirky existential examinations of life and living.
